A few of my public transport-related daydreams have involved automated personal vehicles – you go to a designated stop, press a button and the next available vehicle comes whizzing down a track from a nearby pool. This then takes you wherever you need to go and then either returns to a pool or waits for the next person to turn up at whichever stop it’s at. This effectively eliminates the need for almost all urban transport.
Utter fantasy? Apparently not, because a recent article reveals that people have been dreaming about this for decades. I can’t help feeling a little miffed, as it was supposed to be my breakthrough idea to revolutionise our transport infrastructure. Still, with some more level-headed people working on it, it’s more likely to come to fruition.
