Plans are afoot to build an enormous mosque (holding 40,000) in time for the 2012 London Olympics. The most interesting thing about this isn’t the fact that the US (as usual) has claimed that the backing organisation has links to radical groups, it’s the sustainable design. Wind turbines in the minarets, solar panels on the roof and tidal power from the Channelsea River contribute to a large CHP system, making the structure almost grid-independent. Now that’s khalifa.
