More than nineteen years after the Chernobyl accident, Nature has printed an update on the ecosystem within the exclusion zone. Biodiversity is higher, which is consistent with most of the humans moving out, but how animals have survived given the high radiation levels is a little less straightforward.

I have received many uncomprehending looks in the past when mooting general plans to visit Pripyat, but it seems I’m not alone – the report also mentions ecotourism as a possible source of funds for the Chernobyl management project.
