Several news outlets have been printing interviews with Alexander Yuvchenko, with varying degrees of slant. New Scientist, in typical matter-of-fact manner, printed a transcript (typically behind a subscription wall), available from other sources.

The interview itself is fascinating, not least due to Yuvchenko’s calm and down-to-earth nature. Like a lot of people directly involved with Chernobyl, he is not opposed to nuclear power.

“From where I stood I could see a huge beam of projected light flooding up into infinity from the reactor. It was like a laser light, caused by the ionisation of the air. It was light-bluish, and it was very beautiful.”
